THE COUNTER AT WOOLWORTH’S
Now that I’m a grandfather myself, I realize it is the simple things that create indelible memories for grandchildren. I remember one Saturday when I was five or six years old, my Grandma Rosie took me downtown on the old Red Car streetcar line, to the grand old Los Angeles Theater – a film palace the likes of which I had never seen – to see a Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movie.
Afterwards we went to lunch and sat at the counter at Woolworth’s. I had grilled cheese and a chocolate shake.
This is still my favorite diner meal.
